A beginner’s guide to starting small, learning as you go, and managing risk
It is easy to look at the price of Bitcoin or Ethereum and think you missed your chance. You do not need to buy a whole coin to get started: you can buy a fraction. What matters first is understanding what you are buying, deciding how much you can afford to risk, and building a plan you can follow.
At Bexcrypto, we believe crypto education should begin with realistic expectations. A small monthly amount can help you learn how the market and your wallet work. It can also lose value. No investment schedule or promising coin can guarantee wealth.
Step 1: Choose an amount that fits your life
Could you set aside $10, $20, or $50 a month without affecting rent, food, debt payments, or your emergency savings? If so, that could be a manageable starting point for learning about crypto. If losing that amount would cause hardship, wait until your finances are more secure.
You can change the amount or pause at any time. The aim is to make deliberate decisions, not to feel pressure to buy when prices are rising.
Step 2: Learn how to buy and hold crypto securely
A wallet such as Trust Wallet can let you control your crypto directly. Download it only through its official website or verified app store listing, learn how wallet addresses and networks work, and back up your recovery phrase as instructed. Never send your recovery phrase or private keys to anyone, including someone claiming to represent Bexcrypto. You can also research other custody options and choose the one whose risks and responsibilities you understand.
Before transferring any crypto, double-check the coin, network, and destination address. Consider making a small test transfer first, and account for purchase and network fees.
Step 3: Consider a consistent monthly approach
Putting the same dollar amount into an asset at regular intervals is often called dollar-cost averaging. If you decide to invest $50 each month, you purchase more units when the price is lower and fewer when it is higher. This can make the process easier to follow, but it cannot prevent losses or ensure a profit.
Here is the part of the plan you can calculate in advance:
| Monthly amount | After 24 months | After 36 months |
|---|---|---|
| $10 | $240 contributed | $360 contributed |
| $20 | $480 contributed | $720 contributed |
| $50 | $1,200 contributed | $1,800 contributed |
These figures show your total contributions, not the future value of your crypto. Your holdings may be worth more or less than what you paid after price changes and fees. Even if Bitcoin were to rise 100% from today’s price at some later date, a person buying every month would enter at different prices; the entire balance would not automatically double.
Step 4: Research coins before you buy
Bitcoin and Ethereum are well-known starting points for research, and buying fractions means their unit prices do not set a minimum budget. They still carry substantial risk. Newer coins can offer different opportunities, but they may also have weaker liquidity, concentrated ownership, unclear token supply, or little evidence of a working product.
Before buying a coin, ask: What does the project do? Who is building it? How is the token used? How much supply exists now, and when might more enter circulation? Where can it be traded, and can you verify the token’s contract address? A trending social post is a reason to investigate a claim, not proof that the coin is sound.
If you choose to explore more speculative coins, decide in advance how much of your crypto budget you are willing to lose completely. Avoid using borrowed money or leverage to fund a beginner plan.
Step 5: Review the plan, and keep learning
Once a month, review what you bought, what it cost including fees, and why you still hold it. Prices and your own circumstances can change. You can reduce, pause, or stop purchases if the plan no longer fits your budget or understanding.
